What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use dates, captions, pictures, and short texts to place events in order. They group events by shared features and decide whether statements are provable facts or personal opinions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create an accurate timeline and explain which evidence supports the event order. They classify events using a clear rule and identify facts by naming a source that could verify them.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place events by importance rather than date. They may treat any statement they agree with as fact, or assume opinions cannot include factual details.
How to Assess It
- Give students four dated event cards and two statements about them. Ask students to order the cards, label each statement fact or opinion, and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs dated picture cards from a familiar story, then have them build and defend a timeline using details from the cards.
Ask students to write one fact and one opinion about a school event, then explain how a reader could check the fact.
Play a sorting relay where teams classify event cards by time period, location, or type and state the rule they used.
Use a local museum website to sequence three community events and separate verifiable details from visitors’ opinions.
