What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place events in time order and support their choices with details from sources. They group events by shared features and decide whether statements are facts or opinions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students build an accurate timeline from dates and source clues. They explain their event groups and identify facts as verifiable while recognizing opinions as judgments or beliefs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may arrange events in the order they read them rather than by date. They may treat any statement they agree with as fact or assume opinions cannot contain facts.
How to Assess It
- Give students four event cards and six statements. Ask them to order the events, group them two ways, and label each statement fact or opinion with one reason.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs six dated event cards and source excerpts; students build a timeline, then attach one evidence note to each placement.
Ask, "Which event changed the community most?" Students write a claim, cite two facts, and underline opinion words.
Play Fact, Opinion, or Not Enough Evidence with statement cards; teams hold up labels and explain each choice using a source.
Students create a timeline of five school events from calendars and announcements, then group them by academic, social, or athletic purpose.
