What Students Need to Do: Students use dates and source details to place events in sequence and explain relationships among them. They group events using clear criteria and separate verifiable claims from judgments or beliefs.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student builds an accurate, labeled timeline from several sources and explains order, overlap, cause, or change with evidence. The student classifies events consistently and justifies whether each statement is fact or opinion.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse a source's publication date with the date an event occurred. They may assume nearby events caused each other, or label any disputed claim as opinion without checking available evidence.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Give four dated event cards and two statements. Ask students to order and classify the events, then label each statement fact or opinion and cite one supporting detail.

Lesson moves

Give pairs six source cards; students build a string timeline, color-code events as political, economic, or social, and attach evidence notes.
Ask, "Does the timeline show that one event caused another?" Students write a claim and support it with two dated details.
Play Fact or Opinion Sort: teams place statement cards under labels, then earn a point only when their evidence supports the choice.
Use a local news story to create a three-event timeline, sort details by topic, and flag factual reporting versus commentary.
