What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use dates, sources, and details to place historical events in sequence and group them by shared traits. They support their choices with evidence and identify statements as facts or opinions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given mixed source cards, students can create an accurate timeline and classify each event as political, economic, or social. They can cite a detail that supports each choice and explain why a statement is factual or opinion-based.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume that an earlier event caused every later event. They may treat opinions as false statements, or label statements as facts simply because they agree with them.
How to Assess It
- Give students four dated event cards and two statements. Ask them to order the cards, classify each event, then label each statement fact or opinion and explain one answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs six dated event cards and yarn, then have them build a timeline, sort the events, and cite one detail for each choice.
Ask students to write which event was most significant, then support their opinion with two facts from the class timeline.
Run a fact-or-opinion relay using sentence cards, with teams sorting each card and defending one choice before earning a point.
Compare a local news report with an editorial, then have students highlight verifiable details and circle words that show judgment.
