What Students Need to Do: Students identify which items belong to them and which belong to classmates. They use, store, borrow, and return belongings in ways that prevent loss or damage.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student independently puts away personal materials and asks before using another child’s item. The student handles borrowed items carefully and returns them to the correct place.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think an unattended item is free to use or that sharing means permission is never needed. They may also hide accidental damage instead of telling the owner or an adult.
How to Assess It: Give students this prompt: “Maya finds a classmate’s marker on the floor. What should she do?” Have each student draw or state one respectful action.

Lesson moves

Set up a cubby care station where students label, store, and safely pack a folder, pencil box, and jacket.
Ask, “What should you say and do before using a classmate’s crayons?” Record student answers on a class chart.
Play Borrow and Return, where students ask permission, use one item carefully, and return it to its labeled spot.
Walk through the cafeteria and library, naming ways people protect lunch boxes, books, coats, and other belongings.
