What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify legal civic duties and describe what each requires. They explain how completing these duties supports government, public safety, national readiness, and fair courts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a pay stub, jury summons, traffic citation, or registration notice, students explain the required action and its public purpose. They separate legal duties from voluntary actions such as voting or volunteering.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often label voting and volunteering as legal duties. They may think every citizen must serve on a jury or register for Selective Service, ignoring summons and eligibility rules. Some think laws are optional when they disagree with them.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Name the duty shown in each case and explain why it matters: hiding income, ignoring a jury summons, speeding, and skipping required registration.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups scenario cards and four labeled folders, then have them sort each card by duty and defend one disputed choice.
Ask students to write: Which citizen duty would cause the most harm if widely ignored, and why?
Play Duty Detective: read a civic scenario, and teams name the duty, who must act, and the likely consequence.
Examine a sample pay stub, jury summons, traffic ticket, and Selective Service registration page to identify the duty shown in each.
