What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use letter sounds to read and spell common decodable words. They read regular parts of irregular words and remember the letters that do not match expected sounds.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read taught high-frequency words quickly and correctly without picture clues. They spell decodable words by sound and remember the unexpected parts of irregular words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess a word from the picture or first letter instead of checking each sound. They may also expect every word to follow regular sound patterns.

How to Assess It

Show five taught high-frequency words, including decodable and irregular words. Have each student read all five, then spell one word from dictation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build target words with magnetic letters, say each sound, then place a small star above any unexpected spelling.

  2. Ask students to explain which part of an irregular word follows the usual sound pattern and which part must be remembered.

  3. Play a word card race where students read a card correctly, keep it, and use one collected word in a sentence.

  4. Read a classroom snack list together, then circle familiar words such as the, is, I, and like.
