What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students say the separate sounds in short one-syllable words, then push those sounds together to say the whole word. They treat th, sh, ch, and wh as one sound.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can break map into /m/ /a/ /p/ and ship into /sh/ /i/ /p/. The student can hear and blend two, three, or four sounds without adding or dropping sounds.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count letters instead of sounds, so they count sh or ch as two sounds. They may add an extra vowel sound, saying /muh/ instead of /m/. They may also leave out one sound in blends such as /k/ /l/ in clock.

How to Assess It

Ask each child to push one counter per sound in at, ship, and whisk. Then ask the child to blend /ch/ /o/ /p/ and say chop.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students counters and sound boxes, then say at, fish, chop, and whisk as they move one counter for each sound.

  2. Ask students to decide whether ship or shop has different sounds, then segment both words and explain which sound changed.

  3. Play Sound Steps: students draw a picture card, say each sound, blend the word, and move one space for every sound.

  4. During cleanup, students choose objects named shoe, brush, or clock and segment each name before putting the object away.
