ELA2nd GradeFoundations for Reading

The Standard

Demonstrate the ability to segment words with four and five phonemes, including words with consonant digraphs (e.g., th, sh, ch) and consonant blends (e.g., fr, st, bl).

Virginia Standards of Learning for English · Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: The student will orally identify and produce various phonemes (individual sounds) within words to develop phonemic awareness in support of decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling)

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break spoken words into four or five separate sounds and say the sounds in order. They count each sound in a blend separately but treat a digraph as one sound.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can hear brush and say /b/, /r/, /ŭ/, /sh/ in order. For stamp, the student gives five sounds without adding, dropping, or combining any.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count letters instead of sounds, so brush becomes five parts. They may split sh, ch, or th into two sounds, or combine a blend such as st into one sound.

How to Assess It

For an exit check, say brush and stamp aloud. Ask each student to move one counter per sound, then tell how many sounds are in each word.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students five counters and sound boxes, then say brush, chest, stamp, and plant for them to push one counter per sound.

  2. Ask, “Why does brush have four sounds but five letters?” and have partners explain what happens with sh.

  3. Play Sound Hop: students jump once for each phoneme in a word, then state whether it has four or five sounds.

  4. Show pictures of everyday objects, then have students find one four-sound name and one five-sound name.
