Virginia SOL 1.FFR.2.B
The Standard
Demonstrate ability to blend words with four and five phonemes, including words with consonant digraphs (e.g., th, sh, ch, wh) and consonant blends (e.g., fr, st, bl).
Virginia Standards of Learning for English · Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: The student will orally identify and produce various phonemes (individual sounds) within words to develop phonemic awareness in support of decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling)

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to sounds said separately and combine them into a complete spoken word. They keep every sound in a consonant blend and hear a digraph as one sound.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student hears /s/ /t/ /ă/ /m/ /p/ and says “stamp” smoothly. The student keeps each sound in a blend and treats a digraph as one sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a digraph such as sh or ch as two separate sounds. They may drop one sound from a blend, saying fog for frog. Some add an extra vowel sound, such as /fuh/ instead of /f/.
How to Assess It
- Say /f/ /r/ /ŏ/ /g/, /ch/ /ĕ/ /s/ /t/, and /s/ /p/ /l/ /ă/ /sh/. Record whether the student responds “frog,” “chest,” and “splash” without help.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student five counters; say /s/ /p/ /l/ /ă/ /sh/, then have students push, sweep, and say “splash.”
Ask, “How do /ch/ /ĕ/ /s/ /t/ become chest, and which letters work together for one sound?”
Play Blend Bingo by calling segmented words such as /f/ /r/ /ŏ/ /g/ while students cover matching picture cards.
Give segmented clues for classroom objects, such as /b/ /r/ /ŭ/ /sh/; students blend each clue and find the object.
