Virginia SOL 2.FFR.2.B
The Standard
Demonstrate the ability to blend words with four and five phonemes, including words with consonant digraphs (e.g., th, sh, ch) and consonant blends (e.g., fr, st, bl).
Virginia Standards of Learning for English · Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: The student will orally identify and produce various phonemes (individual sounds) within words to develop phonemic awareness in support of decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling)

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to four or five separate speech sounds and combine them to say the whole word. They keep digraph sounds together while hearing each sound in a consonant blend.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given /f/ /r/ /ŏ/ /g/, a student says frog without adding or dropping sounds. The student also blends /sh/ /r/ /ĭ/ /m/ /p/ as shrimp, treating /sh/ as one sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count both letters in sh as separate sounds but treat st or bl as one sound. They may add an “uh” after consonants, drop a middle sound, or guess after hearing only the first sound.
How to Assess It
- Say, “Blend these sounds and tell me the word: /f/ /l/ /ă/ /g/, /ch/ /ĕ/ /s/ /t/, /s/ /t/ /ă/ /m/ /p/.” Record whether each student blends every sound without help.

Ways to Teach It
Give students counters and four or five sound boxes; say /s/ /t/ /ă/ /m/ /p/, then have them push and blend.
Ask, “Why does /sh/ use one counter in shrimp, while /s/ and /t/ use two counters in stop?”
Play picture bingo by saying segmented sounds aloud while students blend the word and cover its matching picture.
Use pictures of classroom objects, such as clock, brush, and plant; segment each name aloud and have partners identify the object.
