Virginia SOL 1.FFR.2.C
The Standard
Demonstrate the ability to segment words with four and five phonemes, including words with consonant digraphs (e.g., th, sh, ch) and consonant blends e.g., fr, st, bl).
Virginia Standards of Learning for English · Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: The student will orally identify and produce various phonemes (individual sounds) within words to develop phonemic awareness in support of decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling)

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students say a word slowly and separate it into four or five individual sounds. They treat a digraph such as sh as one sound, while separating both sounds in a blend such as st.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can segment a mixed set of words accurately without teacher modeling. For trash, the student says /t/ /r/ /a/ /sh/, and for stamp, /s/ /t/ /a/ /m/ /p/.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count letters instead of sounds, treating sh or ch as two sounds. They may also combine a blend into one sound or leave out the middle sound in a five-phoneme word.
How to Assess It
- Say chest, trash, stamp, and blend. Have each student push one counter per sound, then tell how many sounds are in each word.

Ways to Teach It
Give students five counters and sound boxes, then say words such as chest, trash, stamp, and blend for them to map.
Ask partners, "Why does sh in trash use one sound box, but tr uses two?"
Play a word-card sort where students tap each phoneme and place the card under four sounds or five sounds.
Label a clock and plant, then have students tap and count each sound before placing the labels on the objects.
