What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students hear a one-syllable word as two parts: the opening consonant sound or blend, and the remaining word part. They join the parts to say the word and separate a whole word into those parts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student hears /s/ and /un/ and says sun. The student hears map and separates it into /m/ and /ap/ without adding extra sounds.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split cat into /c/ /a/ /t/ instead of /c/ /at/. They may name letters rather than say sounds, or say /muh/ instead of /m/.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of map, sun, and fish. Ask students to blend one word from spoken parts, then split the other two into onset and rime.

Ways to Teach It
Give students picture cards and two linking cubes; they push one cube for onset and one for rime, then blend the word.
Show a cat picture and ask, “What first sound do you hear, and what part is left after it?”
Play Onset-Rime Match: students pair cards such as /m/ and /ap/, say each part, then blend the whole word.
Use classroom objects such as pen, cup, and book; students name each object, then split its word into onset and rime.
