What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break an oral sentence into separate words. They also divide words into syllable beats and tell how many they hear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- After hearing a sentence, a student places one marker for each word. Given familiar words, the student claps each syllable and tells the correct number of beats.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a short phrase like “the dog” as one word. They may count each sound in “cat” as three syllables or add extra beats when stretching a word.
How to Assess It
- Say, “The red dog can run.” Ask the student to move one counter for each word, then clap the syllables in “rabbit” and “sun.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students counters, say a five-word sentence, and have them push one counter forward for each word they hear.
Ask, “How do you know watermelon has more beats than apple?” Students clap both words and explain their count.
Play Syllable Sort: students draw picture cards, say each word, then place it under one, two, or three hoops.
During snack, name each food and clap its syllables, then compare which item has the most beats.
