What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a complete sentence in print, then find individual words and letters within it. They use spaces and end marks to tell the parts apart.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short printed sentence, a student can point to the whole sentence, one word, and one letter. The student explains that letters form words and words form sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students call a whole word a letter or count each letter as a word. They may treat any line of print as a sentence and overlook spaces between words.
How to Assess It
- Display “The dog runs.” Ask students to circle the whole sentence, box one word, and underline one letter.

Play Print Detective: call out sentence, word, or letter, and students point to an example on a shared page.
Examine a cereal box and have students circle one sentence, box one word, and underline one letter.
