What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Kindergartners are not expected to judge how complex a text is. They build groundwork by reading decodable sentences, listening to rich read-alouds, retelling ideas, and using new words.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads taught decodable sentences accurately and retells a read-aloud using pictures or details. The student answers simple questions and uses a newly taught word correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a longer book is always harder or that pictures make a book easy. They may guess from one picture instead of listening to the full text and checking details.

How to Assess It

Read a short nonfiction paragraph aloud. Ask each student to draw one fact, explain it orally, and use one target word in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards from a read-aloud and have them place the events in order, then retell the text.

  2. After a read-aloud, ask students to name one new fact and point to the picture or words that support it.

  3. Play a vocabulary match game where students pair new words with pictures and explain each match to a partner.

  4. Read a simple weather chart aloud, then have students choose suitable outdoor clothing and explain their choice using chart details.
