What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- There is no separate Grade 2 skill to teach or assess here. Students build readiness by noticing confusion, rereading, and using nearby clues or discussion to repair meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A ready student can notice when a passage stops making sense and try a sensible fix. The student can point to the word, sentence, or picture that helped.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think good readers never get confused or need to reread. They may also choose a fix without checking whether it improves meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short grade-level paragraph with one unfamiliar word. Ask, “What could you do if this part did not make sense, and what clue helped you?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed-up sentence strips to arrange, then have them explain which words helped them create meaning.
Ask, “What do you do when a sentence does not make sense?” Record students’ answers and test each idea during shared reading.
Play Strategy Match by pairing confusion cards, such as unknown word, with action cards, such as reread or check nearby clues.
Read simple directions from a game or recipe, then identify where rereading or checking a picture prevents a mistake.
