What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- First graders are not expected to master a separate reading-strategies skill under this element. They can build readiness by rereading, using known sounds, and checking whether a sentence makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Readiness looks like noticing when a word or sentence does not make sense. The student rereads, corrects the error, and tells what the passage is mostly about.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students guess from the picture or first sound instead of reading through the whole word. Others keep going when a sentence stops making sense, or think rereading means starting the entire book again.
How to Assess It
- Have each student read a three-sentence decodable passage aloud. Ask, "Did that make sense, and where did you reread or check a word?"

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards and a three-sentence decodable passage; students build one sentence, read it, then fix any word that does not fit.
After a read-aloud, students answer the prompt, "What part was confusing, and what helped you understand it?"
Play Catch My Mistake by reading a familiar decodable text with planned errors while students signal, name the wrong word, and correct it.
Read a simple classroom direction together, then have students explain how rereading helps them complete the task correctly.
