What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- There is no separate kindergarten reading-strategy skill to assess here. Students build later readiness by listening closely, retelling key events or facts, and explaining answers with picture or text clues.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A ready kindergarten student can retell a short read-aloud in order and answer who, what, where, or why questions. The student points to an illustration or recalls a detail that supports an answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from one picture without listening to the whole text. They may retell unrelated details, confuse story order, or answer without naming the clue that helped.
How to Assess It
- Read aloud: "Leo packed a towel, sunscreen, and a bucket. He walked onto the sand." Ask, "Where is Leo going, and what details helped you know?"

Ways to Teach It
After a read-aloud, students place three picture cards in story order and retell the event shown on each card.
Ask, "Which part helped you answer the question?" Students draw the clue, then dictate one sentence about it.
Play Clue Detective: read two sentences, show three picture answers, and have students hold up the picture supported by the clues.
Read a simple snack recipe aloud, then have students select and arrange pictures showing the ingredients and steps.
