What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- There is no separate Grade 1 mastery target for text complexity. Students build readiness by reading decodable books accurately and listening to challenging texts with teacher support.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A ready student stays engaged during a read-aloud, retells key ideas, and explains a new word using context. In decodable text, the student reads taught patterns with growing accuracy and persistence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a harder book is simply longer or has more pages. They may guess unfamiliar words from pictures instead of using taught sound-spelling patterns, or lose the main idea while focusing on one detail.
How to Assess It
- Read a short science paragraph aloud, then ask, “What was the main idea, and which detail helped you know?” Students may answer orally or in writing.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two books to sort by features that may affect difficulty, such as print size, vocabulary, sentence length, and picture support.
After a read-aloud, ask, “Which part was hardest to understand, and what helped you make sense of it?” Record one response.
Play Decode and Climb: students read one decodable sentence correctly to move a counter up a five-space path.
Compare a simple weather chart with a short weather report, then identify what extra knowledge the report provides.
