What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use letter sounds and known irregular words to read and reread decodable sentences smoothly. They listen to related read-alouds, learn topic words, and use details from the texts to support answers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read controlled sentences accurately and more smoothly after rereading. With support, they answer questions using several accurate details from read-alouds and connect new vocabulary to earlier texts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess words from pictures instead of using letter sounds. They may give a remembered detail that does not answer the question or name evidence they cannot locate in the text.
How to Assess It
- Have each child read one decodable sentence twice. After a short read-aloud, ask one question and have the child answer with two details, pointing to where each appears.

Ways to Teach It
Build a decodable sentence with word cards, read it aloud, change one target word, then reread the new sentence smoothly.
After two read-alouds about frogs, ask, “How do frogs survive?” and have children cite one detail from each book.
Play Sentence Match: children read decodable strips and place each beside the matching picture, then reread for smoother phrasing.
Use a seed packet and a plant book to identify what seeds need, then label a class planting chart with new words.
