What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect letters with sounds and blend those sounds to read words in short sentences. They remember taught irregular words and reread familiar text more accurately and smoothly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads a short decodable passage accurately using taught sound patterns and irregular words. On a second reading, the student reads more smoothly and corrects mistakes without guessing from pictures.

Common Misconceptions

Some children say each sound but do not blend the sounds into a word. Others guess from the picture or first letter. They may also confuse smooth reading with fast reading.

How to Assess It

Give each child the sentence, “Sam can sit on the rug.” Ask the child to read it twice and point to the irregular word “the.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs letter tiles to build three words from a decodable sentence, then blend each word and read the complete sentence.

  2. Read a short decodable page, then ask, “Which word was tricky, and what letter sounds helped you read it?”

  3. Play Roll and Read: children roll a die, read the matching decodable sentence, then reread it smoothly to keep the square.

  4. Post decodable clues around the room, such as “A map is on the mat,” and have children read each clue to find an object.
