What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to several read-alouds about one topic and connect new facts to what they already learned. They use topic words when talking, drawing, or writing about the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can share connected facts from several read-alouds and use new topic words correctly. The student can explain how an earlier text helped make sense of a later one.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat each book as a separate topic instead of connecting facts across texts. They may repeat new words without knowing their meanings or rely only on illustrations for answers.
How to Assess It
- After the second read-aloud about plant growth, ask, “What did today’s book add to what we already knew?” Have each student answer orally or draw and label one new fact.

Ways to Teach It
After two plant read-alouds, students sequence seed, sprout, and flower cards, then explain each stage using topic words.
Ask, “What did we already know about plants, and what new fact did this book teach us?”
Play a picture and word matching game with topic vocabulary, then have students use each matched word in an oral sentence.
Keep a class plant journal and connect daily observations to facts and vocabulary from the read-aloud series.
