What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely to several texts about the same topic. They connect new facts and words to earlier texts and to what they already know.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students connect details across several read-alouds on one topic. They explain how prior knowledge helped them understand a new idea and correctly use newly learned words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat each text as a separate source and miss links among ideas. They may repeat a new word without explaining it or connect unrelated prior knowledge.
How to Assess It
- Read two short passages about animal adaptations. Ask students to name one new fact, connect it to something they knew, and use one new word.

Ask, “How did what you knew about habitats help you understand today’s text?” Students answer with one detail from the text.
Play Vocabulary Link, where students match topic words to meanings, examples, and details from three related read-alouds.
Study a local weather report, then connect its terms and facts to ideas from class texts about storms and seasons.
