What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely to several texts about the same topic. They connect facts, ideas, and vocabulary across the texts, then use that knowledge to understand new information.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain a topic using accurate details from more than one text. They use newly learned words and connect earlier information to ideas in a new text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat each text as a separate lesson and miss connections between them. They may repeat isolated facts without explaining how earlier learning helps them understand a new text.

How to Assess It

Read a short new paragraph related to recent read-alouds. Ask students to write one fact and one vocabulary word from earlier texts that helped them understand it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. After three habitat read-alouds, students sort picture and fact cards by habitat, then explain connections using topic words.

  2. Ask, “How did yesterday’s text help you understand today’s text?” Students discuss with a partner, then write one connected idea.

  3. Play Vocabulary Match by pairing topic words with definitions, pictures, and facts drawn from the week’s texts.

  4. Invite a school nurse to discuss healthy habits, then have students connect the talk to facts from related books.
