What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students join classmates in saying familiar words together. They recite short poems, rhymes, songs, and patterned story lines, entering at the right time and speaking clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students join the group without repeated prompting and follow the rhythm and repeated lines. They use an audible voice, remember most words, and listen for their turn.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may shout instead of matching the group’s volume. They may enter too early, miss the repeated line, or wait for the teacher to supply every word.
How to Assess It
- Display picture cues for a four-line rhyme, then have small groups recite it. Check whether each student joins on time, speaks clearly, and says the repeated line.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups picture cards for a patterned story, then have them arrange the cards and perform the repeated line while pointing.
After a choral rhyme, ask, “Which words repeated, and how did those words help you know when to join?”
Play an echo and refrain game where the teacher says each new line and students answer with the same repeated phrase.
Practice a short welcome chant, then perform it for another class or for families at dismissal.
