What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create and tell short stories aloud, using events in a clear order. They take part in simple dramatic scenes with clear speech, expression, gestures, and movement.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students tell a short, organized story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. They speak clearly and use expression, gestures, or movement to portray characters and events.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell events out of order, omit key details, or speak too softly. They may also read lines without using expression, gestures, or character voices.
How to Assess It
- Give each student three picture cards and one minute to tell a story that connects them. Check for clear sequence, audible speech, details, and expression.

Ways to Teach It
Give small groups three props, such as a hat, spoon, and box, and have them create and perform a two-minute story.
Ask students to tell a partner about a character facing a problem, then explain how the character solves it.
Play Story Circle, with each student adding one sentence while keeping the characters, setting, and event sequence consistent.
Have students role-play ordering food at a restaurant, using clear voices, complete sentences, and gestures suited to each role.
