What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students speak with a group and recite brief, familiar texts from memory or with picture cues. They match the group's pace, volume, expression, and repeated lines.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student enters on cue, says the words clearly, and stays with the group. The student recalls repeated lines and uses a voice that fits the meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students think speaking clearly means shouting. Others rush ahead, wait for classmates to lead, or lose their place when a line repeats.
How to Assess It
- Display a four-line rhyme with one repeated line. After one practice, have small groups recite it while you check clear words, timing, and expression.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence-strip lines from a repeated rhyme, then have students arrange them, tap the beat, and perform the rhyme together.
After a choral reading, ask, “Which words should we say louder or softer, and why?” then have students demonstrate their choice.
Play Echo Leader: one student recites a short line with expression, and classmates repeat it using the same pace and volume.
Practice a playground chant or school announcement refrain, then discuss how speaking together helps listeners understand and join in.
