What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students memorize a poem and deliver it without relying on the page. They adjust pace, volume, emphasis, pauses, and pitch to convey the speaker’s voice and tone.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student recites the full poem accurately without reading and recovers smoothly from small mistakes. Pace, volume, emphasis, pauses, and pitch match the speaker’s attitude and the poem’s mood.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think expression means speaking louder or acting dramatically throughout. They may pause at every line break, use a sing-song rhythm, or rush when memory is uncertain.
How to Assess It
- Have each student recite eight memorized lines. Check for accurate words, clear speech, purposeful pauses, varied inflection, and expression that fits the poem.

Ways to Teach It
Students mark a printed poem with pause slashes, emphasized words, pitch arrows, and tone shifts, then rehearse using those cues.
Ask students to explain which two words deserve emphasis and how that choice shapes the speaker’s voice.
In pairs, one student recites while the other draws a card directing pace, volume, or pitch, then they discuss which choices fit.
Students record a spoken-word audition for a class poetry podcast, using expression suited to the poem’s audience and purpose.
