What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students memorize a speech and recite it accurately without relying on a script. They use pace, pauses, pitch, volume, and emotion to communicate the intended mood.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student delivers the full selection from memory with accurate wording and no prompting. Pauses, pace, pitch, volume, and facial expression support a clear mood without seeming forced.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think memorization alone is enough, then rush or speak in a flat voice. Some paraphrase forgotten lines or confuse strong emotion with shouting and exaggerated gestures.

How to Assess It

Have each student recite 45 to 60 seconds of an assigned speech without notes. Check wording accuracy, pauses, pace, pitch, volume, and whether the mood is clear.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students color-code a printed speech for pauses, emphasis, pitch changes, and emotion, then rehearse using their markings.

  2. Play two recordings of one speech and ask, "Which delivery better conveys the intended mood, and which vocal choices create it?"

  3. Use mood cards such as inspiration, conviction, or urgency, then have students recite four lines while classmates identify the chosen mood.

  4. Students memorize and deliver a 60-second campaign speech, pep talk, or public service message for a realistic school audience.
