What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose exact words that fit the topic when they explain an idea. They speak loudly enough to hear, at a steady pace, with expression that supports meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gives a short explanation using accurate words from the topic. The student speaks clearly, keeps a steady pace, and changes tone to match meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use general words such as “thing” instead of naming objects or actions. They may think audible speech means shouting, or rush through ideas without pausing or using expression.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to give a 30-second plant report using “seed,” “root,” and “stem.” Check for correct word use, clear volume, steady pace, and expression.
