What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students organize ideas before speaking so listeners can follow them. They speak loudly enough to hear, use a steady pace, and change tone, stress, and pauses to fit the meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can give a short report or retelling with a clear beginning, middle, and end. The student uses enough volume, a steady pace, and vocal expression that matches the meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think an audible voice means shouting. They may rush, speak in a flat voice, or pause in distracting places. Some retell events in the order they remember them instead of using a clear sequence.

How to Assess It

Give students 30 seconds to prepare a 45-second retelling of a familiar class text. Check for audible voice, steady pace, meaningful expression, and clear order.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students arrange four picture cards, then tell the story while a partner checks order, volume, pace, and expression.

  2. Have students mark pauses and emphasized words on a short paragraph, then explain how those choices help listeners.

  3. Play Speaker Coach: partners draw volume, pace, and expression cards, present two sentences, and name one successful choice.

  4. Students record a 30-second morning announcement about a class event, then revise it for clear volume, pace, and expression.
