What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students memorize a brief passage taken from a longer work and recite it accurately without reading. They use pauses, emphasis, pacing, volume, and pitch to match the speaker’s voice and tone.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students recite the passage without prompts, omitted words, or added phrases. Their pacing, emphasis, volume, and vocal expression fit the speaker’s voice and the passage’s tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think memorization alone is enough, so they recite in a flat voice or rush through lines. They may add words, skip phrases, or use emotion that conflicts with the speaker and situation.
How to Assess It
- Give students eight lines from a studied text and five minutes to rehearse. Have them recite without the page, then score accuracy, pacing, inflection, tone, and voice.

Ways to Teach It
Give students printed passages, highlighters, and slash marks to label pauses, stressed words, tone shifts, and changes in volume before rehearsing aloud.
Ask students to write: Which three words deserve emphasis, and how should the speaker sound when saying them?
Run a recitation relay where partners alternate lines from memory, then repeat the passage while matching an assigned tone card.
Compare a poem recitation with a public speech clip, then identify how each speaker uses pauses, volume, and emphasis to hold attention.
