What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students tell or invent a short story, rhyme, poem, or event with a clear beginning, middle, and ending. They use pictures, objects, acting, or dictation to show the order.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student independently arranges three events in a sensible order and explains each event aloud. The student uses clear sequence words so a listener can follow what happened.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name details from each picture without connecting them into an ordered account. They may confuse next and last or think a retelling must use the exact original words.

How to Assess It

Give each student three event pictures to arrange. Ask the student to tell or dictate what happened using first, next, and last.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs three picture cards to arrange, then have them act out the sequence with puppets.

  2. Show a wordless picture sequence and ask, “What happened first, next, and last, and what clues helped you decide?”

  3. Play Sequence Relay: students place scrambled event cards in order, then explain each choice aloud.

  4. After a class routine, students draw arrival, morning work, and meeting time, then dictate the events in order.
