What Students Need to Do

Students revise drafts so ideas are clear, accurate, organized, and fully explained. They use self-checks and specific peer feedback to improve content. They also edit conventions, style, and word choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students strengthen ideas by adding relevant evidence, removing unclear material, and improving organization. They use specific feedback to revise, then edit grammar, word choice, punctuation, and sentence structure accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat revision as correcting spelling and punctuation only. They may add details that do not support the main point or give vague peer comments such as “Looks good.”

How to Assess It

Give students a weak paragraph and ask them to make three labeled revisions: clarify one idea, add one relevant detail, and correct one convention error.

   Cut apart a printed paragraph, then have students reorder sentences, remove one weak detail, and add one sentence that clarifies the main point.

   Ask students to write two peer comments: one specific strength and one revision suggestion tied to clarity, evidence, or organization.

   Run an editing relay where teams correct one sentence at a time for grammar, punctuation, word choice, and style.

   Have students revise a confusing school announcement so families can quickly understand the event, deadline, location, and required action.
