What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread their own draft and a classmate's draft to find strong, clear parts and places needing better information. They give specific suggestions and use helpful feedback to revise.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students point to a specific strength and explain why it works. They identify unclear, irrelevant, or unsupported information, suggest a useful change, and apply fitting feedback to their own draft.

Common Misconceptions

Students may focus only on spelling, punctuation, and grammar. They may give vague comments such as "good job" or "add details." Some think every suggestion must be accepted or try to replace the writer's ideas with their own.

How to Assess It

Have students exchange one body paragraph. Each reviewer marks one strong sentence and gives one specific revision, then the writer explains whether and how to use it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut apart a sample paragraph, sort sentences as clear, unclear, irrelevant, or unsupported, then rebuild the paragraph with stronger information.

  2. Write two sentences explaining why "name the source and connect it to the claim" is more useful than "add details."

  3. Give teams vague feedback cards such as "unclear" or "good job" and award points for rewriting each as a specific, usable suggestion.

  4. Pairs edit a school club announcement so the date, purpose, audience, and next steps are clear to a new student.
