What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students keep a group discussion moving while making room for every person. They build on classmates’ ideas to reach shared interpretations, decisions, or solutions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student invites quieter peers, paraphrases contributions, asks follow-up questions, and connects ideas. The group reaches a supported decision or solution that reflects input from every member.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think participation means talking often or simply taking turns. They may accept a quick majority vote without asking for reasons, checking agreement, or including quieter members’ ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give groups six minutes to choose the best solution to a school problem. Use a checklist to record who invites input, connects ideas, and checks agreement.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups role cards and mixed evidence slips, then have them build one shared claim using one contribution from each member.
Ask groups, “Which idea changed your thinking, and how did another person help develop it?”
Play Consensus Countdown, where teams must reach a decision before time ends and each person must explain one reason.
Have teams plan a class event with a fixed budget, assigning one member to track whose ideas appear in the final plan.
