What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sustain a focused discussion, invite every member to contribute, and connect ideas across speakers. They use the group’s input to form interpretations, make decisions, or solve a shared problem.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks follow-up questions, brings quieter peers in, and responds to ideas rather than simply taking turns. The group can explain how multiple contributions shaped its conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think participation means speaking often, agreeing quickly, or waiting to deliver a prepared point. Facilitators may dominate, call on peers mechanically, or ask for opinions without using them.
How to Assess It
- Have groups discuss whether a character made the right choice. Each group submits its decision and one sentence showing how every member influenced it.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups six evidence cards to sort, then require each member to place one card and explain how it changes the group’s claim.
Ask, “When should a group change its mind?” and have students build one answer that cites every speaker’s contribution.
Play Discussion Bingo with squares for inviting a peer, connecting ideas, asking a follow-up, summarizing, and proposing a compromise.
Run a school policy committee simulation where students use stakeholder statements to choose a phone policy and document whose input changed the decision.
