What Students Need to Do: Students identify misspelled words they use often and correct them. They use spelling patterns, word parts, memory cues, and reference tools, then apply correct spellings in their own writing.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given an eighth-grade paragraph, students find and fix common spelling errors without changing correctly spelled words. In original writing, they spell repeated words correctly each time.
Common Misconceptions: Students often spell only by sound, dropping syllables in words such as different or probably. They may confuse doubled consonants in beginning and necessary, or assume spell-check catches every error.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: Correct every misspelled word in, “The begining of the seperate assignment was definately neccessary, but I recieved no directions.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs letter tiles to build definitely, separate, beginning, and necessary, then cover each word and rebuild it from memory.
Ask students to write: Which part of necessary is hardest to remember, and what memory cue will you use?
Run a spelling relay where teams correct one misspelled word on the board, explain the fix, then tag the next writer.
Have students proofread a mock email to a principal, correcting repeated misspellings before submitting a clean copy.
