What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice when a familiar word is misspelled. They correct it and carry the correct spelling into new writing, using a reference when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student spells familiar words correctly in a new paragraph, not only on a studied list. When unsure, the student checks a reference and confirms that the correction fits the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may spell only by sound, producing forms such as “definately” or “seperate.” They may trust spell-check even when an error forms another real word, such as “form” for “from.”
How to Assess It
- Correct the five spelling errors in this sentence: “I definately knew it was neccessary to seperate the two groups before begining a differant task.”
