What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use familiar sound and letter patterns to spell words. They also learn the remembered spellings of common words that do not follow expected patterns.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly spell familiar words with patterns such as short vowels, digraphs, and silent e. They also remember common irregular words in daily writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may spell every word exactly as it sounds, such as “sed” for “said.” They may also confuse short vowels, omit digraphs, or reverse the order of letters.

How to Assess It

Dictate five words, such as “ship,” “cake,” “went,” “said,” and “they.” Ask students to write each word and circle any part they checked carefully.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs letter tiles to build and sort words such as “cat,” “ship,” “cake,” and “home” by spelling pattern.

  2. Ask students to explain why “said” cannot be spelled only by listening to its sounds, then use it in a sentence.

  3. Play spelling bingo with patterned words and irregular words, asking students to read each completed row aloud.

  4. Have students write a classroom note using five assigned words, then check the spelling with a word wall.
