What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students spell common and previously taught words correctly in their writing. They use sound patterns, syllables, roots, prefixes, and suffixes to work out unfamiliar grade-level words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students spell familiar and recently taught words correctly in daily writing. They use syllables, roots, prefixes, suffixes, and known letter patterns to spell less familiar words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may spell every word exactly as it sounds, missing silent letters or unusual patterns. They may also drop letters when adding endings, such as writing “runing” instead of “running.”
How to Assess It
- Dictate this sentence for an exit ticket: “The children carried their lunches carefully.” Ask students to circle one word and label the spelling pattern used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards to sort by vowel pattern, prefix, suffix, or doubled consonant, then have them explain each choice.
Ask students to write three sentences using “because,” “different,” and “carefully,” then underline the parts that help them remember each spelling.
Play a team spelling relay where students build dictated words with letter tiles and earn a point for naming the spelling pattern.
Have students proofread a mock lunch menu, correcting misspelled food names and common words before creating a clean final copy.
