What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use familiar sound patterns, syllables, and word parts to spell words while writing. They also spell frequently used words correctly and check doubtful spellings.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students spell common words correctly in daily writing. They use familiar vowel patterns, syllables, prefixes, and suffixes to spell less familiar words, then correct errors during editing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may spell every word only by sound, even when a known pattern applies. They may overuse one pattern, confuse similar patterns, or misspell common words they use often.

How to Assess It

Dictate “bright,” “floating,” “careless,” and “because,” then ask students to use two words in one sentence. Check spelling patterns, word parts, and capitals and punctuation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs letter tiles to build “hope,” add “ing,” and explain why the final e is removed.

  2. Ask students to write three words with the same vowel pattern, then explain what the pattern tells readers.

  3. Play Pattern Sort Relay with word cards labeled by vowel teams, endings, or syllable patterns.

  4. Have students proofread a mock lunch menu and correct misspelled common words before posting it in the classroom.
