What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use familiar word parts, syllable patterns, and ending rules to read and spell words. They apply these patterns when they meet unfamiliar or related words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly read unfamiliar words by using known chunks and syllable patterns. They spell related words accurately and explain rules such as dropping e, doubling a consonant, or changing y to i.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may overuse one rule, writing “hopeing” or “runing.” They may spell only by sound, miss syllable patterns, or forget changes such as changing y to i.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Students read “hopeful” and “beginning” aloud, then write run + ing, hope + less, and carry + ed. Have them underline each spelling change.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-word and ending cards to build, sort, and record words such as hoping, hopping, carried, and playful.
Ask students to explain in writing why hop becomes hopping but hope becomes hoping.
Play a whiteboard relay where teams hear a base word and ending, then write the completed word and name the rule.
Students collect five patterned words from classroom signs or school notices, then label each word family, syllable pattern, or ending rule.
