What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize whether frequently used words are spelled correctly. They spell those words accurately in everyday writing and correct errors during proofreading.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students spell common words correctly in sentences, not just on isolated word lists. They notice likely errors and use a dictionary or spell-check suggestions carefully.

Common Misconceptions

Students may spell only by sound, leading to errors such as “definately” or “seperate.” They may also confuse homophones or overlook missing letters when proofreading.

How to Assess It

Give a five-word exit ticket using “because,” “different,” “necessary,” “their,” and “believe.” Read each word in a sentence, then ask students to spell it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards to sort into correct and incorrect spellings, then have them verify each choice with a dictionary.

  2. Ask students to explain which part of “necessary” is hardest to remember and write a memory clue for it.

  3. Run a spelling relay where teams correct one misspelled word at a time in a projected paragraph.

  4. Have students proofread a mock email to a principal and correct common spelling errors before it is sent.
