What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read challenging literary and informational texts accurately, smoothly, and with understanding. They monitor confusion, use repair strategies, build knowledge across related texts, and support ideas with several relevant details.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads unfamiliar grade-level text accurately, at a steady pace, and with phrasing that reflects meaning. They notice confusion, use a fitting repair strategy, and support claims or inferences with several accurately quoted or paraphrased details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think fluent reading means reading as fast as possible. They may choose evidence that mentions the topic but does not support the claim. Some keep reading through confusion instead of rereading, questioning, or using text structure.

How to Assess It

Give students a 250-word grade-level passage. Ask them to read one paragraph aloud, mark and resolve one confusing point, then answer an inference question using two cited details.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a complex paragraph cut into sentence strips, then have them rebuild it and explain how transitions reveal the structure.

  2. Ask students to write which sentence was hardest to understand, what caused the difficulty, and which strategy clarified it.

  3. Run an evidence relay where teams locate two supporting details, record line numbers, and explain how each detail proves a given claim.

  4. Read two short reports about a local issue, then build a shared vocabulary chart showing repeated terms, meanings, and new knowledge.
