What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read demanding stories, poems, articles, and other nonfiction with enough accuracy and stamina to follow the whole text. They explain central ideas, themes, key details, and inferences, then use context or rereading when meaning breaks down.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can finish an unfamiliar grade-level text and give an accurate summary without adding personal opinions. The student answers literal and inferential questions with relevant evidence and explains how a difficult section fits the whole text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an interesting detail instead of the central idea. They may treat an inference as a guess rather than support it with evidence. Some keep reading after meaning breaks down instead of rereading, slowing down, or using context.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unfamiliar 400-word passage. Ask for a two-sentence summary, one supported inference, and a paraphrase of one difficult sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed article to cut into sections, arrange in logical order, and label clues that reveal the structure.
Ask, “Which sentence matters most to understanding the text?” Students defend one choice with two details in a short response.
Run an Evidence Match game where teams pair inference cards with quotation cards, then explain why each match works.
Have students read a school policy and a news report, then summarize what each asks readers to understand or do.
