Virginia SOL 7.DSR.A
The Standard
Read a variety of grade-level complex text with accuracy, automaticity, appropriate rate, and meaningful expression in successive readings to support comprehension. Monitor while reading to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, as necessary (Reading Fluency, K-12).
Virginia Standards of Learning for English · The student will build knowledge and comprehension skills from reading a range of challenging, content-rich texts. This includes fluently reading and gathering evidence from grade-level complex texts, reading widely on topics to gain purposeful knowledge and vocabulary, and using reading strategies when comprehension breaks down.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read challenging passages aloud accurately, smoothly, and at a pace that supports meaning. They reread, notice miscues or confusion, and adjust words, phrasing, expression, or pace.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads an unfamiliar passage with few errors, natural phrasing, and expression that matches the meaning. When meaning breaks down, the student pauses, rereads, and corrects the word, phrasing, or pace.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think fluent reading means reading as fast as possible. They may ignore punctuation, use dramatic expression that does not fit the meaning, or keep going after a misread word changes the sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 150-word passage to read aloud twice, marking any self-corrections between readings. Ask them to state the main idea and cite one supporting detail.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs mark pauses, emphasis, and tone on a printed passage, then record and compare two readings.
Ask students to explain how changing the pause or emphasis in one sentence changes its meaning.
Play Misread Detective, where partners identify planted errors in a read-aloud and explain how each error affects meaning.
Rehearse a short news report, podcast script, or public announcement for clear pacing, accurate wording, and meaningful expression.
