Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students revise drafts so ideas are clear, words are precise, sentences vary, and paragraphs connect smoothly. They edit their own and classmates’ work for usage and mechanics.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students improve ideas, word choice, sentence flow, and connections between paragraphs. They also find and correct errors in capitalization, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraphing, and Standard English.
Common Misconceptions: Students often treat revision as fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may add transitions without showing a clear relationship, or vary sentence openings while leaving fragments and run-ons.
How to Assess It: Give students a short paragraph with weak wording, repeated sentence patterns, one run-on, and missing transitions. Ask them to revise it and label three changes.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a printed draft to cut into sentences, reorder for clarity, add transitions, and tape into a revised paragraph.
Ask students to explain which revision most improves a sample paragraph and support their choice with evidence from the text.
Run an editing relay where teams correct one marked issue at each station, including punctuation, spelling, fragments, run-ons, and paragraph breaks.
Have students revise a school announcement for clear wording, varied sentences, correct mechanics, and smooth movement between paragraphs.
