What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan ways for listeners to take part during a presentation. They give clear directions, collect responses, and connect those responses to the topic or opinion.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student plans an interaction that supports the topic and gives the audience clear directions. The student allows response time, acknowledges contributions, and uses them to continue the presentation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may ask vague questions that get little response, or add an interaction unrelated to the topic. They may also forget to pause, gather answers, or connect audience responses back to the presentation.

How to Assess It

Give students one minute to introduce a topic and lead one planned audience interaction. Check whether directions are clear, participation occurs, and the speaker responds to the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students present a claim, then place audience response cards in labeled agree, disagree, and unsure sections of the room.

  2. Ask students to write one audience question for a presentation and explain how the answers could support the speaker’s next point.

  3. Play Interaction Match, where teams pair presentation topics with useful polls, questions, partner talks, or movement prompts.

  4. Students design a two-minute school announcement that includes a show-of-hands poll and a follow-up response to the result.
